Bestseller: The Kite Runner
February 12, 2008It’s a New York Times Bestseller! Such a great title especially for an asian novel. Just a tag line xD
So, i’m talking about a novel, an extraordinary one. Honestly, i’m such an avid reader when it comes to the genre thriller (esp. Sidney Sheldon). Okay, before i completely crap this blog, i’ll start what my tag line means. The novel that i’m referring is The Kite Runner by Khaled Housseini, an afghan author. I was able to read this for my book report. Actually, it took me 5 mins. to decide whether to grab it for my report and surprisingly, i found myself bringing it towards the cashier. When i reached home, i hurriedly opened it and started reading. LOL
The novel:
I had no interest at all about Afghanistan but through this novel it greatly made an impact. It’s a moving tale about friendship paired with betrayal, and atonement. Well, there are a lot of striking characters in the story; one is Hassan, an illiterate boy but courageous and loyal to his friend Amir. The other one is Rahim Khan, he told Amir a touching line before he died “There is a way to be good again, Amir”. Lastly, the noticeable Amir, his character is someone who is afraid to face troubles, and it was Hassan who defended him. Well, I was affected of the betrayal part, there was such tension.(me: how could you do that Amir?) haha. One good thing of this novel is the presence of Afghanistan’s history, at least I know their situation at that time, and how they were treated during the invasion and regime.
Hassan to Amir: “For you, a thousand times over.”
A book that you couldn’t put down, a must-have.
Still I Rise
February 11, 2008So, here’s the poem that i read/red last January 22, 2008. This post must be earlier than my entry “unexpected” but i suddenly deleted my previous post because i kept on changing the colors and chuva. Well, it’s an afro-asian poem by a well-known poet.
Still I Rise
by Maya Angelou
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise
